QuestionI have a maple tree that I have saved the seeds from - I do not know what type
of maple it is except that it is not a Japanese maple. What treatment if any, do i
have to give to ensure that the seeds will germinate. I live in the north west of
Tasmania, Australia, temperate climate with cool to cold winters.
AnswerSeeds need a simulated dormant period of at least 3 months. So depending on when you harvested the seed will determine when you can sow.
Seeds basically need a good planting medium. plenty of moisture, and warmth to germinate. I plant my seeds in cell packs filled with a soiless sterile starting mix. I then sow the seeds 3 times as deep as the diameter of the seed. Smaller seeds should be placed on top of the medium, pressed slightly to ensure contact, and then covered with a very small amount of the soiless medium. I then use a spray bottle to mist the soil. I always recommend watering from the bottom so not to disturb the seed. I then cover the cell pack with a plastic lid to hold in moisture.
Once the seed germinates, you will need to provide adequate light. I use fluorescent lighting on a timer set for 14 hours per day. The lights should always be kept no further than 3" from the top of the seedling to ensure a stocky growth habit. Once the seedling develops it's second set of leaves, you can then treat it as you would any healthy seedling.
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.
