QuestionWhat is the best way to trim a large Yucca tree? The one I have is about 15 ft.
tall at its highest point and has almost reached the ceiling. It has 7 branches
coming off the main branch which is close to a ft. in diameter. One of the
larger branches has become so heavy that it has totally bent over and is
taking up too much space in the family room. Would it be a good idea to cut
this branch off or should I just cut part of it off? Or a 3rd option should I just
tie it up to another branch? Also, what should I do about the fact that the
tallest branch is running out of room to grow? Help me!
AnswerHello Colleen! That's one great yucca! Here's what to do:
You're going to prune your yucca at the time it goes into its normal growth period, which is early spring. You can do this, preferably in March. Find the height that you'd like your yucca to be, ideally. Then use a pruning or other very sharp saw, or tree loppers and make the cut.
It may seem extreme or unattractive at first, but it will definitely recover and look even better than it does now.
Be sure to give the yucca a good watering after you've pruned it.
Now, here's the great part of pruning yuccas: You can take the top part that you pruned off and produce another yucca. All you have to do is, cut off the leafy top(s) and put the yucca trunk into potting soil. Be sure to put the proper end into the soil, some people make a mark on the bottom where they cut the trunk off of the original plant to be sure they plant it into the potting soil right side up.
Lightly water the trunk, use no fertilizer, and in a few weeks the cutting will begin sprouting new leaves. Care for this new yucca the way you did the original.
Hope this helps! Happy Pruning!
