QuestionWhat kinds of trees can I germinate with my green pippen tree? I would like to plant a Fuji or a Golden delicious? Would that be possible?
AnswerHello and thank you for your question! Yes, absolutely, both of those varieties of apple will pollinate your green pippin. The green pippin has several names that it's known by: Yellow Newton, Newton Pippin, etc. Pippin in the name means that it was grown originally from seed (as opposed to having been developed as a 'bud sport', which is a sport or new cultivar that mutates, often as an improved variety, on the parent tree).
The Green Pippin is self-pollinating, but most all apples produce more heavily with a pollinator. The Green Pippin may be pollinated by: Fuji, Golden Delicious, most crabapples, and most major apple varieties. The following varieties will not make good pollinators: another Green Pippin, Gravenstein, Jonagold, King, Mutsu, and Winesap. Otherwise, nearly any other variety of apple will pollinate your Green Pippin.
Thanks again for your question and don't hesitate to write again!
