Stratification

Question
hi

i have just been reading this:

Jo, the harder the seed, the longer it takes to germinate.  To expedite the process, you need to "stratify" the seed.

The process of stratification is nothing more than breaking down the outer shell of the seed either by knicking the seed with a sharp knife, or slightly rubbing the seed against 400 grit sandpaper.  Then soak the seed in tepid water for 24 hours to complete the stratification.  This entire process will cut the germination period nearly in half.

Once planted, just follow the process I outlined in some of my other posts, including those regarding avocado seed.

I hope this information helps.  Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike

but i cant get hold of process outlines as you have said in the answer
please can you let me know the process
thanks

Answer
As I mentioned in my original response, stratification is one of several processes used to hasten germination by the means of breaking down the seed coat. This can be accomplished by cutting the seed with a knife using a small incision, soaking the seed in tepid water, or by lightly rubbing the seed on sand paper.

The best detailed description of stratification I have found is attached below. If after reading this article you have any questions, please write back and I will be happy to clarify that particular subject.
