QuestionI have a 20 year old Japanese redbud Tree,10 feet tall. I wish to have friends plant one or more in their gardens.
Do I give them seeds? Make cuttings and root them? WHAT is the best way to carry this out. T hanks for your service.
AnswerHi Ralph,
Thanx for your question. If this tree is not a hybrid, give your friends seeds and let them start their own plants. If it's not a hybrid you'll have to use cuttings 6-8 inches long, preferably green, soft wood, all leaves stripped off but the last 2 and dip the cuttings in a rooting hormone and stick 1-2 inches deep in a pot of warm wet sand. Keep the sand wet and keep it warm. Rooting should take place in 8 weeks or more. Check by probing gently around the cutting with a pencil or if you notice green buds of new leaves forming. I hope this helps.
