QuestionI have collected some day lily seeds and have had them in the refrigerator for 2 months. Is it too late to try to start them and plant them in the ground. It has already started frosting in our part of the country. I am in zone 6b. Will the seeds hold till next spring? or should I try to baby them thru the winter inside my house.(I get very little direct sunlight). This is my first attempt at starting day lilies, but have started vegetable seeds for years.
Thanks,
Mary
AnswerMary, I would start them indoors and then transplant them in the spring. It is always risky sowing seeds now since only a few will remain dormant and still germinate next spring. Since most bulbous plants do not bloom from seed their first year, this would also give you a head start. Also, since you do not get direct sunlight, another alternative is to place the seedlings under fluorescent lighting. I use shop fixtures with one warm and one cool bulb. This closely simulates sunlight. Another option is grow lights, but they are much more expensive. Just be sure to leave the seedlings no more than 3" under the lights for 10 - 12 hours per day.
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Mike
