moonflower

Question
I had a beautiful moonflower this summer, it has a lot of pods on it now, how do I save the seeds?....or will it automatically return next year, any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Brenda,
Thanx for your question.  If by moonflower you mean the datura, jimsonweed, thornapple this is the plant with white, trumpet-shaped flowers and the seed are contained within a thorny ball?  This plant will reseed itself in most places but if you want to save the seed, wear a pair of workgloves and remove one of the ripe, brown, dry thornapples.  There should be plenty of seed in on pod to suit your needs.  Carefully split the pod open over a white paper plate.  Discard the thorny ball and place the seeds inside a glass jar with a lid to seal out moisture.  Keep the jar in a cool, dark place until spring.  Start the seeds 6-8 weeks before the last frost like you would tomatoes.  About 1/2 inch deep in good potting soil, moist but not soggy and kept warm.  They will germinate in 2 weeks and keep them under lights.  They are ready to go out after the last frost and when temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees both day and night.  Acclimte seedlings outdoors in the shade safe from rain, hail and wind for 10 days before planting seedlings in direct sun.  Ihope this helps.
