Michigan cypress tree seeds

Question
What is the best way to plant a Michigan (UP) cypress tree seed? I heard that they need heat to germinate and to put them in the oven at a low temperature for a few hours. Would you give me specifics, please. My growing zone is 4-7 Thank you, Lucy

Answer
Hi Lucy,
Thanx for your question.  If by Michigan cypress you mean Taxodium distichum (bald cypress), this tree is native to the SE US and his hardy to zone 4.  The seeds should be planted in a cold frame in late winter, covered with 1/2 inch of soil and make sure the soil drains well and is not allowed to be soggy.  Seedlings will emerge in the spring after the last frost.  The seedlings are fast growing and can get to about 30 inches the first year.  Seedlings do not like shade so make sure the seedlings are always exposed to direct sunlight.  Prick the seedlings out of the cold-frame after they have a couple of sets of true leaves and plant them in the desired location making sure to amend the soil with cured cow or horse manure and during drought, water once a week.  I hope this helps.
Tom
