sycamore tree seeds

Question
I read your answer to jamie on this and needed to clarify a couple of things. I have a brown pod which is already letting the seeds loose. I 'am guessing I need to get that into the cold. I also have some green pods, do those get left out until they turn brown?
Also, after the seeds are planted it said to put back outdoors for the winter, watering to keep moist. Does that mean even if it is freezing outside? I wasn't sure on that one. If that is what I need to do, I will do it.
Thanks, Laurie from Michigan

Answer
Hi Laurie,
Thanx for your question.  Green pods should be allowed to ripen to brown.  Yes, water the pot even when it is freezing outside.  You don't want the soil to dry out completely.  Put the pot in a place where it will be semi-protected from the north wind but it's okay if the pot gets filled with snow.  This will eventually melt into the pot.  Some references say the sycamore do not require a cold period.  You might want to try using fresh seed immediately and starting them indoors.  I hope this helps.
Tom
