QuestionI planted seeds from an apple(Fuji, I think)which I bought at the grocery. I got two beautiful little trees which now are 3-4 years old and are about 10 feet tall. One bloomed this year, but a late frost killed all the blooms. After a long, dry summer, and after the fall rains have begun, it has begun to bloom and put out new leaves on the end of the branches. WHAT's going on? All the other trees in my yard are normal for this time of year here in central Arkansas. Thanks!
AnswerHi B.A.,
Thanx for your question. My expertise is not in fruit trees specifically but in seeding and propagation. A plant blooms because auxins or hormones are stimulating it to reproduce. Some environmental event has triggered your apple tree to start blooming again. It is rare but it happens. I could be based upon the age of your tree and the environmental factors such as a late freeze followed by the dry summer and then new rains triggered a hormonal reaction in the tree. Yes, it can do it to just one tree while the other do not respond. Have you noticed if any other fruit trees in your area are flowering? I think this is just an unusual occurence and no cause for concern. I hope this helps.
