QuestionI read your answer re: growing a Magnolia plant from seeds of the pod; however Tom, how many of the seeds do I plant in the same soil to get ONE tree? When too do I transplant the tree from the pot to soil? I live in St. Petersburg, FL where it's hot 3/4 of the year. Will this tree like to be planted in direct or more of a NE lighted area? How much water, etc. Thanks! CATherine
AnswerHI Catherine,
Thanx for your question. If you take a large pot, say 8 inches in diamter, you can probaly plant 20 or 30 seeds in it. It will be crowded but you'll be guaranteed a lot of viable seedlings and you can prick out the strongest ones. Prick the strongest seedlings out after they have a couple of sets of true leaves not the first set. Plant these seedlings in separate pots until they are about a foot tall. Then, you can't plant them outdoors in direct sunlight. While in pots, don't let the pot dry out but make sure it drains well too. You'll have to water twice a day while it's warm. When planted out in the yard, you generally have enough rain in your area. If no regular rain for a week, deeply soak. I hope this helps.
Tom
