Hard seeds

Question
Tom, I love gardening, but I have a hard time trying to grow plants from seed
that had a very hard cover. The instructions say to  "scar" the seeds but I have
no idea how deep the scar must be. Should I expose the inner part of the seed
or just  make some scratches?  I'll appreciate your help.  Li

Answer
Hi Li,
Thanx for your question.  I use a file or sandpaper and just rub the seed until it appears that the seed coat has been scratched off just barely enough to expose the inner coat.  This has always been enough for me and it also prevents damage to the embryo.  In most cases there is a change in color from the color of the seed coat to a lighter color for the inner coating.  I hope this helps.
