drying seeds for replanting

Question
I recently gathered numerous seeds from my cala lily's that had finished
flowering.  How do I prepare the seeds to replant? Should I grow them in trays or
in the ground like I did with the bulbs and when should I plant them?

Answer
Hi Matt,
Thanx for your question.  Once the calla lily seeds have been removed from the main pod, they can be planted immediately.  The longer they aren't used the better the chance they won't be viable.  If you live in a frost free area, you can put the seedlings outdoors in the shade so they can finish development outdoors.  If you start them indoors in trays (as I have done in the past) they germinate rather quickly but they need lots of light or they start dying, so you will have to grow them under lights if you are growing indoors.  I used 48in long flourescent shoplights suspended 8 inches or so above the seedlings.  Keep the tray watered but don't allow the water to sit.  Sitting water will rot the roots that form the corm which is what your refered to as a bulb.  Immediately after the last frost.  Take the seedlings outdoors once it doesn't get below 50 degrees at night and place them in a shady place where they will be protected from rain, hail, wind, etc. for about 10 days.  Then you can plant them in the garden as you have your adult plants.  I hope this helps.
Tom
