Tree Clipping

Question
Hi there,

I am wondering if it is possible to take a clipping from a spruce tree, re-root it and plant it once it is ready?

Answer
Hi Kelly,
Thanx for your question.  Spruce can be rather difficult to root.  Take cuttings from new growth (green cuttings) about 6 inches long.  Dip in a rooting hormone available at most nurseries.  Cuttings should be taken in the late spring or early summer.  Stick the cuttings in wet sand and keep the medium most and warm (about 80 F).  It will take several months for rooting.  You can check for roots by gently probing around the cutting.  It helps to keep the cuttings sealed inside a clear plastic bag to maintain humidity.  Mist the cuttings twice a day and keep them warm.  I hope this helps.
Tom
