QuestionI would like to collect seeds from a Coleus plant I have but don't know where to begin. Where are the seeds and how do I get them?
AnswerDave, you must allow the coleus to flower and then form a small seed pod(s) after the flower is spent. At this point, the coleus will die, since annuals complete their lifespan after going to seed. That is why we always recommend deadheading and pruning annuals. This not only prevents them from going to seed, but also promotes a bushier habit.
One word of caution. If the coleus you are growing are hybrids, the seed will not produce offspring similar to the parent plant. Only heirlooms should be propagated from seed. Since most plants sold today are hybrids, you would be better off ordering seed from a reputable seed catalog.
By the way, my favorite coleus is the wizard mix. To view photos of this particular annual, I've attached a link to Park Seed. This is the company from which I purchase my seed. If interested, they provide a free catalog. Just visit their site and type in coleus under their search field.
