QuestionDoesn't the wild grape vine kill the trees/shrubs it climbs after getting it all draped? How do you get rid of the unwanted vine? Does it have a chemical in the leaves that can cause a rash when pulled down?
AnswerHi Janet,
If the vine is causing a rash, it is not grape vine but probably poison ivy. Poison ivy can behave in the manner you describe. Be careful and don't get this stuff in your eyes or in any sensitive areas of the body. Some people can have very serious reactions to contact with poison ivy. Use Roundup or Brush-B-Gone to control this pest but be careful about harming the trees nearby. There was this blue stuff, very, very poisonous that worked wonders on mulberries which I had a hard time controlling. All you have to have happen is a bird doing its bathroom business and one seed grows a entire tree of this horrible thing. I bought the liquid at a farm supply store and I cannot for the life of me remember the name. I do not like to recommend dangerous chemicals but this was a must have. There simply was not other way of effectively controlling this noxious tree. You cut the vine open and insert the blue liquid. What it does is seep through the xylem and phloem of the vine or tree and goes all the way to the roots and wipes it out in just a few days! It is wonderful stuff but like I said, very, very deadly. I used gloves so I wouldn't get it on my skin. I'm sorry I can't remember the name but if you go to a farm supply store or Coop, I think they can find it for you. Just tell them you need a strong chemical control for noxious vines. I hope this helps.
