QuestionI live in Dearborn, Michigan. My kimono celosia plants started out very brightly colored and healthy; the blooms are losing color and dying off. I have noticed small holes in some of the leaves; could there be an infestation? The other plants don't appear to have the holes yet they are losing color and dying off also. Please help! Thank you.
AnswerKimberly, the plants have definitely been infested with some type of insect. Without seeing the insect, or you providing a description, it is hard to say exactly which one. Based on the area of the country in which you live, and your general description, I would venture a guess that it is either aphids, mites, or flea beetles attacking the plants.
You can control any of these insects with insectidal soap, which can be purchased at most garden centers. You can also spray them with either rotenone or pyrethrum. Both of these products are organic, meaning they're non-toxic to humans, pets, and the environment. They are made from plant derivatives, and break down in the soil with no residual effects. They are extremely effective against each of the insects I have described. Attached is a link to two companies that market both products.
