Daylily Propagation?

Question
I was cutting back my Day Lily's and noticed that the spent stems actually had
developed little pods with black seeds within.  In the past, I have kept the
"spent"  stems trimmed back but with the Monsoon rains Oklahoma has had this
year, it has been too wet to monitor things in my garden.  My question is:  Can
these seeds be planted for more Day Lily's.  If so...do you have any special tips?
Thank you!

Answer
Hi Sue,
Thanx for your question.  Daylilies often produce seedpods.  The pods produce viable seeds one can grow for new plants.  If you have hybrids, the seeds with develop into plants that will not (most likely) resemble the parents.  It could still be fun planting the seeds and seeing what comes of it.  You could develop the next rage in Daylilies.  Daylilies from seed will take 2-3 years for the first bloom.  The seeds will benefit from a short cold period, wrapped in damp paper towels and sealed inside a plastic baggie.  Leave in the fridge for 2-4 weeks and then put the seeds in rich, potting soil, damp, but not soggy.  Keep the pot in a warm area (70-75F) and germination will occur within 24 days.

I would not start the seeds until late winter or early spring.  I hope this helps.
Tom
