Plant Nutrients

Question
I recently seede some Japanese Maples in a cold frame, if it is possible please could you tell me the nutritional requirements of the species of plant from the time of propagation to planting out.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Midoco,
Thanx for your question.  If you have used a commerical potting soil, you shouldn't have any nutritional needs until after the seeds have germinated.  After the seedlings have their first set of true leaves (the first leaves are seed leaves) you can begin feeding with 1/2 strength fish emulsion or 1/2 strength 12-12-12 fertilizer every 10 days or so until you plant the seedlings in separate pots.  After the seedlings are few months old you can feed full strength according to the directions on your fertilizer until they are ready to be planted out.  I hope this helps.
