nectarine seed germination

Question
I have some wonderful necatrines and I have saved the seeds. How do I germinate? what is the process?

Answer
Hi Susie,
Thanx for your question.  Nectarine seeds are easy to grow, however, bear in mind that if you plant these seeds the fruit probably will not resemble the fruit you bought because of hybridization.  Most fruit sold in the grocery store is the result of grafting and hybridization.  It is fun to grow from seed so in an average pot, use some moist but not soggy potting soil and plant your seeds about an inch deep.  They will probably germinate quickly, say, in a couple of weeks.  Wait until the seedlings have two true leaves (not the first seed leaves) and then gently prick out the seedlings and pot up in separate pots.  They need lots of light but acclimate them first by placing them in the shade for 10 days.  Then they can have full sun.  The seedlings benefit from being outdoors during the summer and mild months but will not survive freezing winters outdoors.  You can train them to be houseplants by continuously pruning them.  Don't prune until after they bloom and set fruit if you want fruit.  It takes 5-7 years to get fruit from seed.  I hope this helps.
Tom
