propagate maple trees

Question
where do I get the seeds to propagate a new Japanese maple using a live tree? Is there a way to get what I need from a live tree to create a sappling ?  Can I do this by using a cutting from the live tree?

Answer
Hi Daniel,
Thanx for your question.  You can take cuttings of green wood about 8 inches long.  Strip off all but the last couple of leaves and dip the cut end of the cutting into a root hormone like Rootone.  Stick the cutting into a soil less mix or warm wet sand.  Keep moist and warm.  After about 8 weeks the sapling should have begun to root.  You may also see some new leaf growth as the cutting roots.  You can probe around the cutting with a pencil to check for roots.  Once there is a good network of roots, plant the saplings in separate pots and then put outside in a place protected from direct sunlight, rain, wind, hail and extremes of temperature for about 10 days.  After that, the cutting can be planted in the desired garden spot as long as it gets full sun.  There are some places that sell seeds to Japanese maples.  Try this link.  http://seedrack.com/index2.html

I hope this helps.
Tom
