QuestionHello! I live in Abilene, Texas...not sure the "zone" we're in for planting...just wondering what flower and/or vegetable seeds are best for planting in May in my area? Any advice would be appreciated.
Many Thanks and Blessings,
Julie
AnswerHi Julie,
Thanx for your question. You are in USDA Zone 7b. For flowers, I recommend cannas, oriental and Asian lilies, daylilies, hollyhocks, hardy hibiscus, hostas, purple vitex, crepe myrtle, coreopsis, Texas sage, iris, red hot poker, rain lily, roses, agapanthus, false indigo, achillea. For veggies, I would recommend Swiss Chard, greenbeans or any pole or bush bean, melons, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. There are summer lettuces that are good for your climate such as oak leaf, deer's tongue, Jericho and Summertime. You can grow these greens all summer long in stages. Collard greens and kale will work too but will be sweeter in the fall. I sure hope this helps. A fine local resource is the Texas A&M Cooperative Extension Service. Here is contact information you might find helpful for your area.
