QuestionCan I grow lilacs in Alabama? And where can I find the tree? I love the flower...it reminds me of home (Spain) Thanks
AnswerHi Conchi,
thanx for your question. Lilacs generally need a cold period for proper growth and bloom. I have heard that cutleaf lilacs might grow ok in the deep South. If I were you I would try purple vitex which bloom sin the summer and resembles lilac. It also has ornamental foliage that is somewhat palmate. Also, crepe myrtles do well as a subsitute and in different colors. If you will provide me with your county I can put you in touch with some local experts who may be able to find a lilac cultivar but I have only heard of the cutleaf and some folks say it doesn't do well in South Alabama. I hope this helps.
