QuestionMike, I have a pussy willow branch that I have been rooting since February. It has developed a nice root system and two leafy "branches." I'd like to plant this - first in a pot and then later to the yard. I'd like it to survive, as this is my favorite plant. Any helpful hints? I live in central Louisiana. Thanks.
AnswerAnn, I would transfer it to a 12" pot filled with organic soil. Allow the plant to mature through the middle of fall. In late September, you can then transplant it in your yard. Fall is the best time for transplanting since this allows the roots to establish over the winter while the tree is still in a dormant state. Just be sure to plant it no more than 2" above soil level.
When transplanting, water very deeply to help avoid transplant shock. Then allow the soil to dry out to a depth of 3" before watering again. This process forces the roots downward, enabling them to draw in nutrients and oxygen. I would also apply a balanced fertilizer once every 10 days at 1/2 the recommended solution.
Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
Regards,
Mike
