QuestionTom , I want to start a redwood tree farm, I have 2 60x100 green houses one has heated tables , auto misting and humidity controlled, the other is for the transplant to tubes for hardening before going outside, I need to ask you , how(what part of tree and where , how long ect..) and when to clip the cuttings, what to root them in , ( perlite or a mix of perlite and planting mix), and how long do I have after cutting to dip in hormone and place in growing medium? Can I cut and store in water for a day or so? My goal is a big one as I would like to grow 50,000 a year plus... I am located in Stockton Calif and have 20 acres and have approx 300 1 to 4 year old trees to cut from (is that enough to get the quanity of cuttings or do I need more trees?). Thanks in advance Steve
AnswerHi Steve,
Thanx for your question. I'm really not qualified to answer this type of question. I'm just an amateur and you are taking on an enormous project. I'm certainly not saying it can't be done. It sounds like you have already done a lot of prep and have a lot of the equipment. Here is a contact in Stockton that I'm sure you will find useful. I hope this helps. It is the California Cooperative Extension Service out of UC-Davis. They have an office in Stockton. http://cesanjoaquin.ucdavis.edu/sbdisplay/stafflist.cfm?county=2019
