growing bing cherrys from a cutting

Question
Hi Tom;  We had a huge wind storm this winter and most of a very old cherry tree came down, the downed 'branches' are budding beautifully so I took a bunch of cuttings rather than just letting them die along with the tree and was hoping to plant them, is this possible and how???

Answer
Hi Tina,
Thanx for your question.  Cuttings should be 6-8 inches long.  Strip off all of the leaves except the last 2 or 3.  Make cuttings with a sharp knife.  At the heel (the cut end) dip it in a rooting hormone such as Rootone which is available at most nurseries.  Put the cuttings 2 inches deep in a moist (not soggy) soil less mix.  Keep the bottom warm.  Rooting should begin to take place in about 8 weeks.  Check by probing with a pencil looking for roots.  The cutting will  start to grow new leaves once it has rooted.  You can pot each cutting up separately and then place them outdoors in an area that is protected from direct sunlight and rain, hail and wind for about 10 days and then plant the plants in direct sunlight.  I hope this helps.
Tom
