Stopping daylily propogation

Question
Hi!  I have somewhat of an abnormal question - I've searched high and low for an answer and am finally resorting to this.  First, let me tell you I am as novice a gardener as they come.  This is my first house, first garden, and first problem!  I have 10 daylily plants (no idea what kind, as previous owner left no information) that flower with yellow blooms surrounding an evergreen tree (again, no idea what kind) in my front yard garden.  I would like to plant other annual and perinneal flowers in the garden, but have not been able to because the daylilies are taking over!  I simply can't stop them from spreading.  They grow these strings of "bulbs" that sprout up small plants and they choke out any other plant I try to grow.

Now I am worried that the daylilies won't flower this year (my first spring in the house) b/c they'll be putting all their energy into forming these new plants.  I spent all weekend once digging up all the roots and "bulbs" as best I could...only to find a week later that they were back full force.  Please help!!!!!  Thanks for your time and expertise.

Melissa

Answer
Hi Melissa,
Thanx for your question.  The daylilies will continue to bloom and will not waste all of their energy making new plants.  If you don't want them there, keep digging them up.  I have areas in my yard that were infiltrated by the noxious "ditch lily" the wild, orange day lilies.  I just keep digging them up and removing them as I see them come up.  Eventually, you will get rid of them.  I know this probably isn't what you wanted to hear.  Go ahead and plant what you want in there and remove the new day lilies as they sprout.

I hope this helps.
Tom
