QuestionTom, About a week ago I started some corn, beans, and some cabbage plants in a Burpee Seed starting kit. The seeds are all starting to sprout ,much to my suprise, so quickly. But a white fungus is on the corn cells, one this morning, and 6 tonight. What can I do? Is this a problem? Thank You, Greg
AnswerHi Greg,
Thanx for your question. The affliction you describe sounds like damping off disease which is a fungus. It happens when temps are warm and soil is damp and there is not good air circulation. Remove the diseased seedlings at once to cut down on the risk that the disease would spread. If the seed starter is covered, uncover it and aim an oscillating fan at low speed at it. Check the seed starter daily to make sure appropriate moisture levels are maintained. I use a thin layer of milled sphagnmum moss which inhibits the development of this fungus. I hope this helps.
