Propagating Impatents

Question
Two questions: 1.how do you propagate impatiens? and 2.  can I plant cucumber seeds at the base of okra so they can use the okra stalk as a stake?  Thank you.

Answer
The best way to propagate impatients is with cuttings. Simply take a cutting from a young branch, one that has not turned woody, and remove all but the top set of leaves. Dip the stem into a rooting compound (you can purchase rooting compound at most garden centers) and then place the stem into a good potting soil. Water the soil thoroughly until the water comes through the drainage hole. Then cover the potted plant with clear plastic to create a mini-greenhouse effect. Within 2-4 weeks, the plant should have rooted. You can then remove the plastic and care for the plant as you would any seedling.

In regard to the cucumber seeds, you can plant them at the base, but make sure you separate the plants by at least 12". Otherwise, the plants will compete with one another for nutrients and water. The end result will be smaller plants with a limited harvest.

A better approach would be to use a tomato stake and train the cucumber up the stake. You can also place stakes 2' apart and install netting between the stakes. The cucumbers will then climb the netting naturally with a little assistance on your part for the first few weeks.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
