How do I dig them up with out hurting them or killing them? Thank you Tammy
AnswerHi Tammy,
Thanx for your question. If you have had your last hard frost, now is a good time to transplant. Otherwise, wait until after your last hard frost. Many shrubs can be safely transplanted as long as you dig deep and take as much of the roots as you can or, you can take part of the shrub if that is easier. Full grown trees are difficult to dig up and transplant without the aid of special hydraulic tools made for this purpose. I've never dug up full grown trees and transplanted them. I have done small saplings that are only a few years ago and again, this requires digging deeply and making sure you have a good portion of the roots. Snowball bushes prefer full sun. Make sure the bush is in a place where it will get at least 6 hours of sun per day. When you move the bush or tree, make sure the hole you did for the transplant is larger that from where the tree or bush came. Put some compost in the bottom of the hole and spread the roots out in the hole. Cover up the roots with the remaining soil and then soak the plant. Make sure it gets plenty of water if it doesn't rain regularly. A good soaking once a week should suffice for the first year. I hope this helps.
