QuestionI recently bought some bare root day lillies. I have them in water right now until I get the flower beds ready. What type of soil and ferterlizer would be best? And also how will I keep them alive now that it is fall and the growing season is at an end. I live in north Florid, it is mild right now but there will be times it will be cold. thank you.
AnswerPat, day lillies are hardy and will survive transplanting in most climates throughout the U.S. This is especially true in your area. Fall is the best time to transplant since it gives the roots ample time to establish over the winter before producing next spring.
In regard to soil, you need to use organic soil rather than top soil. I amend my soil with compost, aged manure, peat moss, shredded leaves, and dried grass clippings every fall. I then till these materials into the soil. This results in a fertile soil that stays friable throughout the year and provides a constant source of nutrients to the plants. If you do not have access to these amendments, you can purchase organic soil at any garden center.
I hope this answered your question. Good luck, and feel free to write again if you ever need assistance.

Mike
