QuestionI have planted several delphiniums and only one has survived over several years. I would like to propagate it. Can one use cuttings or does it have to be seeds?
AnswerHi Jan,
Thanx for your question. Delphiniums are short-lived perennials that seldom last longer than 3-5 years. Take cuttings in late spring about 6-8 inches long. Remove all but a few leaves and dip the cut end in a rooting hormone like Rootone. Stick the cuttings in a moist (not soggy) soil less mix and keep them warm, misting them 2 or 3 times a day. They should root in a few weeks. Check after 2 or 3 weeks by probing gently to check for roots. Once there is a good network of roots, plant them in separate pots and allow them to get stronger and start producing new leaves. Feed them ever 10-14 days with a balanced fertilizer 12-12-12. Gradually acclimate them to the outdoors by placing them in a shaded spot safe from rain, wind, hail, direct sun. Don't allow them to dry out but don't let them be waterlogged. After about a month, plant them in a well drained area with direct sun. I hope this helps.
