QuestionMy grandson and I set out 5 plants of Rose of Sharon for my husband, he passed away before he could set them out and we want to know how to care for them in the fall and winter in zone 5. I had some information but in time after my husbands unexpected death it has been misplaced. Any help would be so appreciated. Thank you.
AnswerHello Dorotha,
I am so sorry for your loss and for your grandson's loss.
Rose of Sharon are easily propagated in Zone 5. Because you have already set the plants out you are one step ahead of the game. Frost times are approaching or are already here, probably in your case. The next thing I would do is put a thick mulch of straw or hay around each plant until the plant is surrounded bu about 3 feet of straw or hay. Make sure that your plants are watered at least once a week and continue to water them but don't feed them fertilizer. Water until the ground is frozen solid or until January. Rose of Sharon mature quickly once they are comfortable in their site and it will be a wonderful memorial for you and your grandson or your husband and his grandfather.
My mother passed away 5 years ago and every summer, I see the lotuses and waterlilies she bought for me for one of my birthdays! I have some peonies and hostas from her homestead. A constant reminder of her love for me. It is wonderful and I appreciate what you and your grandson are doing. I hope this helps!
