QuestionI have a very large beach spider lilly (estimate about 100 bulbs in one clump). This year I had seven stalks that I have just removed. Some pods are dry, others are still green. I live in SW Florida. How do I propatate the seeds?
Also, how do I care for the "mother plant"?
AnswerHi John,
Thanx for your question. I've been doing a lot of research on it. One thing I have noted is that you wanted to know how to propagate it. You have a plant with 100+ bulbs. The best way to propagate the plant is to separate the bulbs. Why bother with seeds which are much more difficult to grow and monitor? To propagate seeds, I would place the seeds in a pot of moist (not soggy) potting soil and gently cover them with more soil and keep the pot very warm (75-85F). The seeds should sprout in less than 4 weeks. Once the seeds have sprouted they need to be matured under lights indoors (40-watt shop lights) and then they can be acclimated outdoors after the last frost. To acclimate plants grown indoors, the plant will need to be placed in an area outdoors that is shaded and protected from extremes in wind, rain, hail, hot, cold and sunlight. After that, if you're in a frost-free area, the beach spider lily will grow happily. I hope this helps.
