QuestionWhat is the best way to start avacado seeds in a jar?Is piercing the seed with toothpicks neccassary? Is planting them directly into soil the better alternative?I live in maryland and recently put seeds into a jar.Is it to late into the season to do so?Thank you very much R.Kisner
AnswerHi Ron,
Thanx for your question. I have always found it easier and more effective to root avocado seeds by placing 3 or 4 toothpicks into the seed (it helps suspend the seed in a jar of water) and place these toothpicks near the flat end of the seed so that 3/4 of the seed is submerged in the water. Change the water when it becomes cloudy. Seed will germinate in soil, just keep it very warm (80F) and moist but not soggy. Germination will occur in 1-6 months. Now is as good a time as any to start your project. Just remember that avocadoes have a high light requirement so as soon as green growth appears, pot the seedling in a large pot and place in a window that gets a southern or eastern exposure. I hope this helps.
