QuestionI planted a mum in an 18" pot. If I mulch the top of it after I cut the mum back in late fall, will that keep it from freezing and dying in the winter. I want it to come back in the pot next year.
Thanks, melissa
AnswerMelissa, it will all depend on the severity of the winter. Mums are hardy, and most will withstand temperatures down to 10F. But if we get subzero temperatures, the plants become vulnerable.
I mulch my mums heavily with straw. Since you are using pots, I would mulch them as you normally would. If we do get severe weather this winter, you have the advantage of covering the entire pot with a blanket during that period.
If you take these precautions, your mums should survive and do well again next spring.
Good luck, and please write again if you ever need assistance.

Mike
