Questionwhen trying to grow persimmons from seed do you have to do something to the seed first to make them germinate? i planted some in some soil last year and i watered them and kept them in sunlight regularly and nothing happened. i dug up the seeds and none of them had even started to swell and germinate. i heard you are supposed to freeze them for a month or so and then plant them. thanks
AnswerHi Jeff,
Thanx for your question. Persimmon seeds require an extended cold period in order to break dormancy and germinate. I would plant the seed in the pot and leave it outdoors for the winter but keep it watered. You can also duplicate this in the fridge. Place the pot inside a plastic baggie and seal it. Keep it in the fridge (not the freezer) for at least 90 days. Bring it out in the warmth and wait a month or two for germination. If it still doesn't germinate throw it back in the fridge for another 3 or 4 months then repeat the warm period process. Many deciduous trees and shrubs require multiple cold/warm periods so, you'll have to be patient. I hope this helps.
