hardening off pineapple

Question
I was able to successfully germinate 3 pineapple seeds. I planted them into containers which continually keeps the soil evenly moist. They are doing well growing indoors. At some point I want to transfer them to my garden outdoors. I live in central Florida. They are about 2 months old and 1/2 inch high. When and how can they be hardened?

Answer
Hi Lois,
Thanx for your question.  This may not be the best time to harden off pineapple.  This is a plant that is grown in the tropics.  We are now approaching the cool times in the U.S. even in Central Florida.  If you are going to harden off plants, place them outdoors in a place that has dappled shade and is safe from extremes of heat, cold, hail, rain and wind.Let the plant sit in this position for 10 days.  After that, pineapple should be planted in direct sunlight.  Pineapple will not tolerate frosts.

I hope this helps.
Tom
