water iris

Question
Dear Tom....I have inherited a pond and some yellow Iris in this pond !... at the moment the big green pods are hanging on just waiting to be picked !!!(I think) BUT... what do I do with the pods after I have picked them ? ...  and to pick your brain once more !... can u grow been sprouts?... thanking you in anticipation....

Answer
Hi Jean,
Thanx for your question.  If you are in the U.S., especially in the NE, yellow iris, growing in a pond is an invasive species that originates in Siberia and has made its way down to the U.S.  I have it in my pond here in Kansas but it has not developed into an invasive species yet.  The Species Iris Group of North America SIGNA) has stopped trading seeds of this species because it has become so invasive. Ach!  I just remembered.  Iris pseudocorus.  That's it.  Contact your local county extension agent and I'm sure s/he will verify my information.  Take off the pods and destroy them.  You don't need to destroy the plant.  I don't.  I just destroy the pods so the plant won't spread.

In regard to bean sprouts...not in the pond.  Do these indoors and do a Google search and I'll bet you'll find tons of references for growing all kinds of edible sprouts.

I hope this helps.
Tom
