AnswerHi Carole,
Thanx for your question. Are you talking about zonal geraniums (the kind that aren't hardy in most of the U.S.) or are you talking about hardy geraniums also referred to sometimes as crane's bill amongst other names. I think you're talking about zonal. Many of these do not produce seed. It is easier to dig them up and stored them upside down in a basement that is cool 38-45 degrees F. and very humid. You'll have to soak the root ball periodic when it dries out but the plant will usually make it through the winter. You can also take cuttings about 4-6 inches long and plant them in growing medium in pots and place in sunny windows for the winter. Keep them moist but not soggy. After they begin producing new leaves, fertilize with weak, balanced (10-10-10) fertilizer once every two weeks. Sometimes there is a lot of rot, so take plenty of cuttings. I haven't found any seeds on any of my zonal geraniums lately. That doesn't mean that some of them don't produce seeds. I know there are varieties that do produce seed and one can find these seed packets at Earl May and other garden centers and from Thompson and Morgan and other seedsmen. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information.
