QuestionHi Tom, I wanted to germinate a Southern Red Oak acorn(s), Post Oak acorn(s), and Longleaf Pine seed(s). I was wondering how to make all of them germinate successful. If I can get them to grow and establish I will eventually plant them in my yard or maybe I can germinate them in my yard. I have a heavy, tough, and deep clay soil and I抦 in north AL in zone 7a.
Thanks
Any help is greatly appreciated
AnswerHey Josh,
Nice to hear from the South. I lived in Fort Walton Beach for three years while I was stationed at Eglin AFB. I have traveled extensively through Alabama.
The best way to germinate the seeds you mentioned in your posting is to plant them in separate pots filled with a good potting soil. Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep. Keep the pots watered but not soggy. Keep the pots outdoors. All of these seeds require and extended cold period at 40 degrees or below for about 90 days. North Alabama's weather will meet this requirement. Remember to keep the pots watered but not soggy. Don't worry if you get an unusual snow or sleet storm. It won't harm the pots. I hope this helps. Let me know what happens.
