QuestionHow do you propagate a bing cherry?
AnswerHi Charles,
If you're asking how to grow one from seed you'll have to plant it one inch deep in some good potting soil. Keep it moist but not soggy. The seed requires at least 90 days of temperatures below 40 degrees in order to break its dormancy. You can do this by leaving the pot outside for the winter (just keep it watered) or you can put the pot sealed inside of a plastic bag and place it in the fridge for 90 days. If left outside, the seed should sprout within a few weeks after the last frost but it could take several months too. If you use the fridge method. Remove the pot from the fridge after 90 days and place in a warm room. Keep the pot watered and sprouting should occur in a few weeks to a few months.
If you're asking about growing a tree that you buy at the nursery, the sapling needs to be planted in full sun, well-drained soil. Dig a hole that is bigger than the root ball so it will fit in with plent of room and a little lower into the soil than it was planted in the pot or bag. Place some dried manure in the bottom of the hole and fill it with water. Put the tree into the hole when most of the water has drained and cover it well with the soil. Drench it with water again. Water once a week for the first growing season. You'll need to fertilize it too. You can find fertilizer sticks at the nursery made for fruit trees. It will take a couple of years for it to bear fruit. You will also need another pollinator cherry tree to get fruit from the bing. Ask your nurseryman for a recommendation for a pollinator. They should have some ideas. I hope this helps.
