QuestionWhat is the proper way to save seeds?
AnswerHi Don,
Thanx for your question. After the squash is fully ripe and you have cut it off of the vine, slice it open and scoop out the seeds. Clean off all of the membranes and junk around the seeds. Spread them out on a plastic dish (not a paper plate because they will stick to the paper) and allow them to dry out for a week or two. AFter that, put the seeds in a glass jar and seal it. Store it in a cool, dark, dry place. Stored this way, squash seed remain viable for about 5 years. Remember that squashes will cross pollinate with each other so if you had more than one variety of squash growing near each other they have probably cross-pollinated and the plants from the seeds you save will probably not resemble the parents completely. If these seeds come from a hybrid, next year's seedlings will probably look nothing like the parent. If this is an open pollinated variety that has been isolated from other squash varieties you can expect the offspring to look and behave like the parent plants. I hope this helps.
