plants growing in pebbles


Question
hi, i was wanting to know how well plants (radish seeds)can grow in pebbles (like a pot of pebbles) please provide some infomation.thankyou.

Hi Brianna,
Thanx for you question.  If the pebbles are kept moist, the radish seeds will germinate and come up through the pebbles.  Radishes are root plants so they won't grow well in this kind of medium.  Pebbles will allow for quick evaporation of moisture which plant roots very much need in order to keep the plant alive.  If you want to grow something in pebbles it would probably have to be a water plant.  You could get a container and fill it with pebbles and grow something like a papyrus or umbrella palm (it's really a type of rush), horsetail rush or even water irises but, the pebbles will not provide any nutrients to the plant and you will probably need to put a small water plant fertilizer tablet in the pebbles to keep the plant going.  Another thing you could do, is plant the water plants mentioned above in some dirt and then cover with a 4 inch layer of pebbles and then add water.  I hope this helps.
