QuestionHi Mike
I have noticed that a number of people have asked questions about propogating avocado seeds and I wondered whether there is a standard method for propogating from 'hard' seeds such as these? I am particularly interested in trying to grow a plant from a lychee seed.
thanks

AnswerJo, the harder the seed, the longer it takes to germinate. To expedite the process, you need to "stratify" the seed.
The process of stratification is nothing more than breaking down the outer shell of the seed either by knicking the seed with a sharp knife, or slightly rubbing the seed against 400 grit sandpaper. Then soak the seed in tepid water for 24 hours to complete the stratification. This entire process will cut the germination period nearly in half.
Once planted, just follow the process I outlined in some of my other posts, including those regarding avocado seed.
I hope this information helps. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
Regards,
Mike
