QuestionTwo brief questions,1,I live near Wash Dc where we have had a mild fall.I planted a batch of Cherry Bell radishes in late August they were ready around Sept 20 only half had a well rounded bulb, others had just cracked roots it was hot still in Sept generally 80 and above, tried planting more in late Sept they are huge now with many leaves but again just a cracked root ,edible but not round,I am using raised beds with a mixture of potting and gardening soil, planted no less than 3 inches apart and I make sure soil stays moist, what is the problem? radishes are supposed to be one of the easiest things to grow but they don't work out for me ,I have had somewhat better luck in the spring. Also begonias planted in the spring have sent seeds and I have about 6 small ones growing,Can I dig thenm out put them in pots by a sunny window so they remain alive and plant them back outdoors in the spring to grow more and flower?or will they survive outdoors and continue there growth in the ground?
AnswerHi Peter,
Thanx for your questions. If you were talking about Spanish black winter radishes, I would say go ahead and start in August. Other radishes should be started towards the end of September. Plenty of water and NO fertilizer, that means NO fertilizer. Sorry, I'm not yelling but radishes grow best in average soil Dig up the small begonias, repot them, bring them indoors and put them on a sunny shelf. They will not survive the winter outdoors. I hope this helps.
