QuestionHi Mike, I would like to know if seeds packaged for 2005 can still be used. Should I just plant them now in the places I want them in my garden or wait until next spring to start them. Thnaks for oyur help.

AnswerJeanne, most seeds will stay viable for 3-5 years if kept dry and at temperatures between 35F and 40F.
I personally keep mine in ziplock bags stored in a sealed tupperware container, which I keep in the back of my refrigerator. Although germination rates will decline every year by around 10%, I simply sow a little heavier every year to compensate.
Attached is a table that will assist you in determining the average life span of most vegetable seeds. Flower seeds generally last up to 5 years. (Please forgive the formatting of this table should the numbers not line up. This website does not allow for tabs.)
Seed Type Years Seed Type Years
Asparagus 3 Muskmelons 5
Beans 3 Onions 1
Beets 4 Peas 3
Broccoli 5 Peppers 2
Cabbage 5 Pumpkins 4
Carrots 3 Radishes 5
Cauliflower 5 Spinach 5
Corn 2 Squash 4
Cucumbers 5 Tomatoes 4
Lettuce 5 Watermelons 4
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
Regards,
Mike
