What are the main things to consider about housing a tropical plant in a controlled environment. How could I increase the rate of growth/yield etc

Alex,

You need to maximize light, provide an optimum temperature, ensure adequate watering, proper fertilization, pest control because you will have insect pests.  If you can meet all of these then you can maximize growth the plants genetic potential, no more.
