QuestionHi Gary,
I tried starting some flowering perennials from seed but did not have much luck. Only about 1/3 of the seeds sprouted, and within a week or two of sprouting they seemed stunted. My questions are:
Should I use a special starter soil?
How soon should I transplant them to larger pots or outside?
Should I leave the flourescent lights on for 24 hrs?
Is softened water harmful?
Thanks for your help!
AnswerWarren,
Starting your own perennials from seed can be fun but I do not think they are worth all of time and worry to grow plants this way for the homeowner. In all honesty unless you have an acre I believe you are better oof purchasing these plants. You only need one or two of any variety and buying makes more sense.
Now to answer your questions. Perennial seed is notorious for erratic germination so expect the results you have observed. Any good commercial seed medi will work. Transplant when they big ebnough to have a couple of true leaves. Go with the lights. The softene dwater could be harmful for the young seedling, so use distilled at the beginning.
Good luck
