Vegetables from seeds

Question
Hi Tom,
I am new to "Home Veg.Gardens" I would like to start off with prep.of ground, any special soil needed, fertizlers, irrigating with micro irrigation systems for small areas, planting of veg.seeds, furrows, special coverings to protect seedlings & sprouting plants. etc.
Sounds like a "tall order"? But, as I seek advice from various "experts", the more confused I become.
Now, you as an experienced gardener with many tried and tested methods, should be the best person to turn to for expert advice.
If possible, teach me in "step by step" methods.
Thank you.
Lin.

Answer
Hi Lin,
Thanx for your question.  I grow a vegetable garden every year.  I start a lot of my seeds indoors like peppers, tomatoes, egg plants but for a beginner, buy these already started and ready to plant from your local nursery.  Don't plant these until the ground has warmed and there is no danger of frost and evening temps don't go below 50 degrees F.  How big of a garden do you want?  Go to your library and get the book Square Foot Gardening.  It helps you organize your garden and it will help you figure out how much space you need.  When planting vegetable seeds, follow the directions on the back of the seed packet.  If this isn't explicit enough, contact your local county extension agent horticultural specialist.  They have a ton of brochures that help the backyard gardener.  If you will post a follow up with your county and state, I can put you in touch with this free service from your state's agricultural college.  I am associated with the Wyandotte County Kansas Extension Service Master Gardeners which is part of the cooperative extension service of Kansas State University.  We provide a lot of advice and free brochures to the people in our community.  I hope to hear from you again.
thx,
Tom
